GEORGE HEFFNER

Darlington. March 20- George Heffner, well known resident of Darlington and a veteran of the civil war, died at his home this morning at 4 o'clock from an attack of heart disease. Mr. Heffner had been in fairly good health up until shortly before his death and was seen on the downtown streets the first of the week. The deceased was 73 years of age and was born in Putnam county in 1851. At the age of twelve years he enlisted in the civil war. Mr. Hefner held the distinction of being one of the youngest soldiers in Indiana. It was only after his third attempt to enlist that he was permitted to join the service. Mr. Heffner spent his early life in Putnam county and for a time was a member of the police force at Greencastle. Later he became city marshal there. For several years the war veteran lived in Ladoga and Whitesville communities and it was there that he was first married. After his wife's death he came to Darlington where he was married for a second time to Mrs. Elizabeth Wheeler Neander. He is survived by his wife and several children by his first marriage. Mr. Heffner while in Darlington was city marshal for a time. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Whitesville - A three months old child of Geo. Heffner and wife died on Monday of measles and was buried at Myer's cemetery. Five other children and the mother are quite sick with the measles. Died April 9, 1888 - thanks muches to Kim H for these :)
